Äitienpäivän aamuna klo 4:30 meitä lähti 3 henkilöä (Minna-Mari Harju, Henri Stenroos Pro Valkjärvi, Ari) laskemaan Nurmijärven Klaukkalan Valkjärven lintuja.

Lintulaskenta liittyy 3 vuotta sitten tehtyyn Valkjärven telkänpönttö projektiin, jossa talkoilla tehtiin 20 telkänpönttöä ja käytiin viemässä ne ympäri järveä sopiviin paikkoihin, joista oli sovittu maanomistajien kanssa.

Tässä lintulaskennassa kierrämme sähkömoottorilla varustetulla soutuveneellä Valkjärven ympäri ja laskemme kaikki linnut joita näemme/kuulemme ja tarkastamme kaikki 20 pönttöä, josko niihin on tullut pesintöjä. Yksi meistä on lintujen rengastaja eli hän on sitten se, joka pönttöjen tarkistuksen tekee.

On Mother’s Day morning at 4:30, 3 of us set out to count the birds of Lake Valkjärvi in ​​Klaukkala, Nurmijärvi.

The bird count is related to the Valkjärvi birdhouse project that was done 3 years ago, where 20 birdhouses were made with volunteers and taken around the lake to suitable places that had been agreed upon with the landowners.

In this bird count, we will travel around Lake Valkjärvi in ​​a rowing boat equipped with an electric motor and count all the birds we see/hear and check all 20 birdhouses to see if they have nests. One of us is the bird ringer, meaning he is the one who checks the birdhouses.

Laskenta kesti noin 4 tuntia eli palasimme lähtöpaikkaan klo 8:30.

Aurinko oli nousemassa ja lähtöpaikkamme oli upeasti vastavalossa.

The calculation took about 4 hours, so we returned to the starting point at 8:30. The sun was rising and our starting point was beautifully backlit.

As you can see from the picture, the surface of the lake was crystal clear.

Kiersimme järven lähellä rantaa ja kiikaroimme sekä kuuntelimme lintuja.

We went around the lake near the shore, used binoculars, and listened to the birds.

Laskennassa löysimme 30 silkkiuikkua, joista 26 esiintyi pareina. Silkkiuikku tekee pesän ruovikkoon keräämällä järvikasveja ja korsia lautaksi, jolle sitten naaras laskee munat ja molemmat puolisot hautovat niitä vuorotellen.

During the count, we found 30 Great crested grebes, 26 of which were in pairs. The Great crested grebe builds a nest in the reeds by collecting lake plants and straw to form a raft, on which the female then lays her eggs and both partners incubate them in turns.

Vaikka keskityimme telkkiin, niin kyllä järvellä oli myös muita lajeja, esim. tukkasotka, kalatiira, västäräkki, laulujoutsen, varis, punarinta ja kalalokki.

Although we focused on the tern, there were also other species on the lake, such as the Tufted duck, Common tern, White wagtail, Whooper swan, Carrion crow, European robin and Common gull.

Hienoa oli myös nähdä kurki kävelemässä metsän reunassa ja sen puoliso hautomassa ruovikossa.

t was also great to see a Common crane walking on the edge of the forest and its mate incubating in the reeds.

Laskennassa yleisin lintu Valkjärvellä tänä vuonna oli rantasipi, joita laskimme peräti 31 kappaletta. Näistä 24 liikkui pareittain eli toivottavasti pesintöjä on runsaasti odotettavissa.

The most common bird in the count at Valkjärvi this year was the Common sandpiper, of which we counted no fewer than 31. Of these, 24 were moving in pairs, so hopefully there will be plenty of nesting to be expected.

Koska järven kiertäminen kestää neljä tuntia, niin pidimme tottakai puolessa välissä eväiden syönti tauon ja ihastelimme maisemaa.

Since it takes four hours to go around the lake, we of course took a break halfway through to eat some snacks and admire the scenery.

Yhtäkkiä aivan vieressämme alkoi tikan rummutus ja hämmästyimme, kun havaitsimme, että pikkutikka oli koivun rungolla noin 15 metrin päässä meistä. Siinä se etsi ruokaa noin 5 minuuttia ennenkuin lähti muualle. Minulle tämä oli vasta toinen kerta kun näin pikkutikan. Pikkutikka on käpytikan näköinen, mutta vain puolet sen koosta eli noin 15 senttiä pitkä.

Suddenly, right next to us, a woodpecker started drumming and we were amazed to see that a Lesser spotted woodpecker was on a birch trunk about 15 meters away from us. There it searched for food for about 5 minutes before moving on. For me, this was only the second time I had seen a Lesser spotted woodpecker. A Lesser spotted woodpecker looks like a Great spotted woodpecker, but is only half its size, about 15 centimeters long.

Aina kun vastaamme tuli projektin asentama telkänpönttö, rengastaja kiipesi katsomaan pöntön pesintä tilanteen.

Every time we saw a nesting box installed by the project, the bird ringer climbed up to check on the nesting situation.

The nest box in the picture has clearly been visited by a Common goldeneye, as its feathers have been left around the edges of the nest opening.

Mutta mikä oli telkkien tilanne? Itse asiassa melko hyvä. Kun vuonna 2022 veimme nuo 20 telkänpönttöä paikoilleen, niin tiesimme, että niihin tulee pesintöjä hitaasti, sillä telkkä naaras valitsee seuraavan kevään pesäpaikkansa edellisenä syksynä ennen lähtöään muuttomatkalle.

But what was the situation with the nest boxes? Actually, pretty good. When we installed those 20 nest boxes in 2022, we knew that Common goldeneyes would slowly start to appear in them, as the female Common goldeneye chooses her nesting site for the following spring the previous autumn before she leaves for her migration.

Vuonna 2023 ei pesintöjä ollut vielä yhtään.

Vuonna 2024 ei vieläkään ollut yhtään varmaa pesintää. Kuitenkin kolmessa pöntössä oli käyty ja neljässä oli merkkejä mahdollisesta pesinnästä. Kuitenkin lehtopöllö oli asettunut pesimään yhteen pönttöön ja sillä oli kaksi munaa pöntössä, myöhemmin keväällä molemmat poikaset rengastettiin.

Mutta tänä vuonna tilanne oli jo huomattavasti parempi: kolmessa projektin pöntössä oli jälkiä pesinnästä ja kahdessa oli haudonta käynnissä.

In 2023, there were no nestings.

In 2024 there was still no confirmed nesting. However, three nests had been visited and four showed signs of possible nesting. But a Tawny owl had settled in one nest and had two eggs in it, later in the spring both chicks were ringed.

But this year the situation was significantly better: three of the project’s nests showed signs of nesting and two had incubating ongoing.

Lisäksi yhdessä telkänpöntössä hautoi lehtopöllö kahta munaansa.

In addition, a Tawny owl incubated two of its eggs in one of the nest boxes.

Kaikenkaikkiaan tänä vuonna kahdestakymmenestä tarkistetusta pöntöstä yhdeksässä on ainakin käynyt tai hautonut telkkä tai lehtopöllö. Erinomainen tulos ja toivottavasti ensi keväänä tilanne on vielä parempi, kun täällä nyt haudotut poikaset etsivät itselleen omaa pesäpönttöä tulevina vuosina.

All in all, out of the twenty nest boxes checked this year, nine have at least been visited or incubated by a Common goldeneye or Tawny owl. An excellent result and hopefully the situation will be even better next spring, when the chicks that are currently incubated here will look for their own nest box in the coming years.
