Tammikuun alussa vierailin Lagoan kunnassa sijaitsevassa Sitio das Fontes puistossa.

At the beginning of January, I visited the Sitio das Fontes park in the municipality of Lagoa.

Sää oli melko viileä noin 9:30 aamulla, mutta varpuset visertelivät heti parkkipaikalla autosta noustessa.

The weather was quite cool around 9:30 in the morning, but the sparrows were chirping as soon as I got out of the car in the parking place.

Kävelin kanavan viereen ja edelleen kanavassa ei ollut yhtään vettä. Muistan vielä 7-8 vuotta sitten tekemäni vierailut alueella, jolloin vettä oli kanavassa vielä runsaasti.

I walked next to the canal and there was still no water in the canal. I still remember my visits to the area 7-8 years ago, when there was still plenty of water in the canal.

Alueella on yksi Algarven parhaista pohjavesialueista, mutta epäilen, että vesitaso on myös täällä laskenut todella alas kuten myös muilla vesirikkailla alueilla.

The area has one of the best groundwater areas in the Algarve, but I suspect that the water level has really dropped here as well as in other water-rich areas.

Alueella on Arade-joen eräs lahdelma ja kun lähdin kävelemään sen vasemmalle puolelle kanavan yli kulkevan sillan kautta, saavuin pienelle laiturille. Tällöin oli laskuvesi ja hyvää aikaa kahlaajille tutustua lahden pohjassa oleviin äyriäisiin. Melko lähellä käveli 2 rantasipiä ja punajalkaviklo sekä valkoviklo.

There is a bay of the Arade River in the area and when I started walking to the left side of it via the bridge over the canal, I arrived at a small pier. It was low tide at that time and a good time for waders to get to know the crustaceans at the bottom of the bay. Quite close were 2 Sandpipers and a Common redshank and a Common greenshank.

Tällä puolella lahtea ei tällä kertaa juuri muita lintuja näkynyt, joten päätin lähteä lahden toiselle puolelle.

There weren’t many other birds to be seen on this side of the bay this time, so I decided to head to the other side of the bay.

Kun lähestyin rakennuksia, niin puissa lauloi punarinta ja mustapäätasku lennähti pienen tolpan päähän. Sekin näytti pörhistelevän, jotta pysyisi lämpimänä.

As I approached the buildings, a Robin sang in the trees and a European stonechat female flew to the top of a small post. It also seemed to be fluffing up to stay warm.

Tätä lahden oikeaa puolta on helppo lähteä kävelemään pientä polkua pitkin kohti Arade-jokea. Enkä ehtinyt kävellä kuin 200 metriä, kun lahden keskellä näin kaksi kapustahaikaraa, joista toinen lennähti melko lähelle minua etsimään joen lahden pohjalta ruokaa. Minulla oli hauskaa, kun yhtäkkiä yksi rapu tarttui kunnolla kapustahaikaran nokkaan ja se ei millään meinannut saada sitä irti. Se toki sitten lopulta onnistui päätä heiluttelemalla.

It is easy to walk along the small path towards the Arade River from this right side of the bay. I had only walked 200 meters when I saw two Spoonbills in the middle of the bay, one of which flew quite close to me looking for food at the bottom of the bay. I had fun when suddenly one of the crabs got a good grip on the Spoonbill’s beak and it couldn’t get it off. Of course, it finally managed to do so by shaking its head.

Lopulta pääsin Arade-joen rantaan, sinne on vajaa 1 km matkaa. Kun polulla astuin yhden pensaan takaa näkyviin, edessäni noin 30 metrin päässä istui kuningaskalastaja tolpan päässä. Taisimme molemmat hämmästyä tapaamisesta ja niinpä kuningaskalastaja lähti heti lentoon muualle. Ehdin kuitenkin ottaa siitä muutaman hyvän kuvan.

Finally I reached the bank of the Arade River, it’s less than 1 km away. When I stepped out from behind a bush on the path, about 30 meters in front of me, a kingfisher was sitting on a post. We were both surprised to see each other, so the kingfisher immediately flew away. However, I managed to take a few good pictures of it.

Samaan aikaan lentoon lähti ihan läheltä myös pikkukuovi, joka varmaan myös pelästyi minun paikalle tuloani.

At the same time, a Eurasian whimbrel also took off from nearby, probably also scared by my presence.

Näiden kahden linnun näkeminen ja kuvaaminen oli tämän matkan kohokohta.

Seeing and photographing these two birds was the highlight of this trip.

Odottelin vielä paikalla noin 15 minuuttia, mutta lähellä lenteli vain etelänharmaalokkeja sekä yksi riuttatiira. Joen toisella puolella olevan puun oksalla istuskeli sääksi. Se oli sen näköinen, että oli varmaankin juuri saanut saaliikseen hyvän kalan, syönyt sen ja nyt oli ruokalevolla.

I waited there for about 15 minutes, but only Yellow-legged gulls and one Sandwich tern were flying nearby. On the other side of the river, an Osprey was sitting on a branch of a tree. It looked like it had probably just caught a good fish, eaten it, and was now resting.

Palasin takaisin rakennuksille ja kuvasin lahden pohjukassa olevan laiturin yli kohti Arade-jokea.

I returned to the buildings and photographed over the pier at the bottom of the bay towards the Arade River.

Kun kuvasin tätä, niin vierestä lensi parvi pikkulintuja ja laskeutui läheiseen puuhun. Siinä oli 10 vahanokan parvi. Ne ovat varsin hauskan näköisiä lintuja, kun niillä on todella punainen nokka ja punaiset silmänympärykset.

As I was taking this picture, a flock of small birds flew by and landed in a nearby tree. There was a flock of 10 Waxbills. They are quite funny-looking birds, with really red beaks and red circles around their eyes.

Kun käännyin lähteäkseni, niin 10 metrin päähän maahan lennähti hemppo.

When I turned to leave, a Common linnet flew to the ground 10 meters away.

Kaiken kaikkiaan havaitsin tällä reissulla 23 eri lintulajin edustajaa: 10 vahanokka, 7 etelänharmaalokki, 3 tylli, 3 punajalkaviklo, 3 rantasipi, 3 kapustahaikara, 3 varpunen, 2 valkoviklo, pikkukuovi, riuttatiira, merimetso, silkkihaikara, harmaahaikara, sääksi, kuningaskalastaja, iberian vihertikka, siniharakka, heinäkerttu, samettipääkerttu, mustarastas, punarinta, mustapäätasku ja pensasvarpunen.

In total, I observed 23 different bird species on this trip: 10 Waxbill, 7 Yellow-legged gull, 3 Common ringed plover, 3 Common redshank, 3 Sandpiper, 3 Spoonbill, 3 House sparrow, 2 Common greenshank, Eurasian whimbrel, Sandwich tern, Great cormorant, Little egret, Grey heron, Osprey, Common kingfisher, Iberian green woodpecker, Iberian magpie, Zitting cisticola, Sardinian warbler, Blackbird, Robin, European stonechat and Spanish sparrow.

Tämän lisäksi läheisen talon pihalla kukko kiekui silloin tällöin koko paikalla olo aikani, mutta sitä en laskenut mukaan havaittuihin lintuihin.

In addition, a Rooster crowed occasionally in the yard of a nearby house the entire time I was there, but I didn’t count it among the birds I saw.
