Helsingin Viikissä Suomen Lintuvarusteen kaupan edessä olevalla aukiolla järjestettiin 15.8.2026 lintumessut.
On August 15, 2026, a bird fair was held in the square in front of the Suomen Lintuvaruste store in Viikki, Helsinki.
I arrived around 11 a.m. and checked out the photography products, the telescope, and the generally positive atmosphere at the fair, as the sun was shining and everyone was having a good time.

Näissä teltoissa esiteltiin esim. Liettuan lintumatkoja, Skaftunga Nature lintumatkoja sekä kuvatuotteita.
These tents featured, for example, birdwatching tours in Lithuania, Skaftunga Nature birdwatching tours, and photo products.

On the other side of the square, visitors could take part in bird walks, bird contests, or even buy a birdhouse.

Then it was time to change scenery again—not too far away—so I parked the car at Jokisuuntie 13 and walked from there toward Lammassaari.

Jokisuuntieltä lähdetään hiekkapolkua pitkin, joka myöhemmin muuttuu lankuista tehdyksi kävelypoluksi veden päälle kohti Lammassaarta.
Melkein heti, kun pääsin ulos metsästä ja siirryin lankkupolulle ruovikon keskelle, näin merikotkan lähellä Arabianrantaa. Se siellä kauempana liiteli ja nautti näköaloista.
From Jokisuuntie, you set off along a sandy path, which later turns into a boardwalk over the water towards Lammassaari.
Almost as soon as I emerged from the forest and stepped onto the boardwalk in the middle of the reed bed, I spotted a White-tailed eagle near Arabianranta. It was gliding in the distance, enjoying the view.

Ehkä pari minuuttia myöhemmin aivan minun läheltäni jostain ruovikon päältä ohitseni lennähti petolintu ja vasta kotona katsottuani valokuvia ja kysyttyäni Apuksen pojilta tunnistusapua, selvisi, että lintu oli varpushaukka.
Maybe a couple of minutes later, right near me, a bird of prey flew past me from atop some reeds, and it wasn’t until I got home, looked at the photos, and asked the Apus boys for help identifying it that the bird I observed was an Eurasian sparrowhawk.

Lammassaaren lankkupolun varteen on tehty pari lintujen havainnointipistettä, joissa voi vaikka istahtaa nauttimaan auringosta tai sitten pysähtyä tarkkailemaan lintuja.
A couple of bird-watching spots have been set up along the boardwalk on Lammassaari, where you can sit down to enjoy the sun or stop to watch the birds.
This time, there was a young Carrion crow at the observation spot, calmly watching people pass by, turning its head every now and then. I guess it was wondering why there wasn’t a picture of it on the information sign below.

Varsin tarkkasilmäinen tarkkailija.
A rather keen-eyed observer.

Hetken päästä saavutin Lammassaaren rannan ja käännyin vasemmalle kohti lintutornia.
A short while later, I reached the shore at Lammassaari and turned left towards the birdwatching tower.

Tornista on hienot näkymät peltoaukealle, jolla tällä kertaa asusteli kymmenkunta lehmää.
The tower offers a wonderful view of the open field, where about a dozen cows were grazing this time.

A little further ahead of the cows, there was also a flock of sheep grazing, with three Carrion crows keeping watch from the top of the posts.

Tornissa on kaksi taulua, joissa on esitelty usein havaittavia lintuja tai muita eläimiä.
There are two displays in the tower featuring commonly seen birds and other animals.

Tällä kertaa sopivasti tornin edessä meren rantamatalikolla oli mustaviklo, suokukko ja suosirri ruokailemassa rannassa.
This time, as luck would have it, a Spotted redshank, a Ruff, and a Dunlin were feeding on the shore in the low-lying area by the sea, right in front of the tower.

Nopeasti ohi lensi myös valkoviklo.
A Common greenshank also flew by quickly.

But there were also dozens of Northern lapwing on the beach, and then suddenly they were startled by something and took flight. A moment later, they returned to the beach to feed.

Rantaruohikossa viihtyivät myös varikset.
Carrion crows also made themselves at home in the beach grass.

Upea paikka havainnoida lintuja melkein veden pinnan tasolta.
I spent about 20 minutes in this tower, and then it was time to continue on to the left toward the bird hide, which was built just a few years ago. It’s a wonderful spot for birdwatching, almost at water level.

And as you can see from the information sign, there’s a chance to spot just about any kind of bird here.

Ihastelin merimetsoja, jotka levähtivät ponttonilautalla, jonkun matkan päässä lintupiilosta.
I admired the Great cormorants resting on a pontoon raft, a short distance away from the bird hide.

Right near Lammassaari is an island called Loppi, where there were also many Great cormorants, but this time they were mostly perched in the treetops.

Yhtäkkiä katseeni kiinnittyi johonkin ruskeaan aivan merimetsojen puun lähellä. Sinne tuli kauris ruokailemaan.
Suddenly, my gaze was drawn to something brown right near the Great cormorant tree. A deer came over to eat there.

When you’re sitting almost at water level, the photos of the birds come out from a pretty good angle—meaning you can photograph them as if you were in the water yourself.
A few young Eurasian teals were swimming nearby; one of them was calm, whilst a couple of others were racing about behind it.

Sitten oli taas aika vaihtaa paikkaa eli jatkaa matkaa Lammassaaren toisella puolella olevalle Kuusiluodolle.
Then it was time to move on again – that is, to continue my journey to Kuusiluoto, on the other side of Lammassaari.
Kuusiluotoon lähdetään Lammassaaresta hieman kapeampaa lankkupolkua (aiemmin tilalla oli pitkospuut).
Ruovikko sinänsä oli melko hiljainen, sillä hyönteissyöjä linnut ovat jo pääosin lähteneet muutolle etelään.
The walk to Kuusiluoto starts from Lammassaari along a slightly narrower boardwalk (there used to be duckboards).
The reed bed itself was fairly quiet, as the insect-eating birds have for the most part already migrated south.
Juuri kun olin saapumassa Kuusiluodon lammasportille (luodolla on kesäisin lampaita hoitamassa kasvillisuutta), niin taivaalta alkoi kuulua saapuvien hanhien ääntä. Läheltäni lensi noin 30 valkoposkihanhea hienossa muodostelmassa.
Just as I was arriving at the sheep gate on Kuusiluoto (sheeps are kept on the island in the summer to keep the vegetation in check), I began to hear the sound of approaching geese from the sky. Around 30 Barnacle geese flew past me in a splendid formation.

Tulihan edes yksi kuva pikkulinnustakin tällä matkalla.
I made it to the islet, climbed up to the shore facing the city and sat down to eat my packed lunch. As I sat there, I gazed at the skyline of Helsinki city centre and spotted a young blue tit in the reeds near me. At least I managed to get one photo of a little bird on this trip.

Sitten palasin takaisin autolle.
Then I returned to the car. Another great thing was that there were five food-selling vans parked near the car park. A great service for the sunbathers, anglers and birdwatchers there.
Havaitut linnut tällä retkellä: 73 töyhtöhyyppä, 37 sinisorsa, 30 valkoposkihanhi, 18 merimetso, 15 tavi, 11 varis, 7 varpunen, 5 sinitiainen, 3 sepelkyyhky, 3 suokukko, 3 talitiainen, 2 pajulintu, 2 peippo, 2 suosirri, harmaahaikara, jalohaikara, liro, merikotka, punajalkaviklo, ruskosuohaukka, tylli, varpushaukka ja västäräkki.
