Kauniina aurinkoisena aamuna noin klo 8 saavuin Sagresiin, kävin aamukahvilla Intermarche kaupassa ja jatkoin Cabo de São Vicenten suuntaan ja käännyin sisämaahan ennen majakkaa.

On a beautiful sunny morning around 8 am, I arrived in Sagres, had my morning coffee at the Intermarche store, and continued towards Cabo de São Vicente, turning inland before the lighthouse.

Kun ympärillä on vain tasaista maata ja välillä karjaa lauduntamassa, niin paikalla viihtyvät pikkulinnnut, kuten kiurut, sirkut, kottaraiset sekä yllättäen myös alppivarikset. Siellä lenteli myös noin 20 töyhtöhyypän parvi.

When there is only flat land around and sometimes cattle grazing, small birds such as larks, buntings, starlings and surprisingly alpine crows thrive there. There was also a flock of about 20 Northern lapwings flying there.

Tällä kertaa minun onnistui myös näkemään kiikarilla sinisuohaukka, joka liiteli kauempana etsien syötävää.

This time I also managed to see a Northern harrier through my binoculars, which was soaring further away, looking for food.

Tien varrella on yksinäinen (mutta asuttu) maatila, jonka jälkeen tie haarautuu kahtia: vasemmalle kohti Praia de Telheiraa (upea kallioranta) ja oikealle kohti Santo Antoniota, jonne tänään käännyin.

There is a lonely (but inhabited) farm along the road, after which the road forks in two: left towards Praia de Telheira (a stunning rocky beach) and right towards Santo Antonio, where I turned today.

Maatalon edustalla olevalla pellolla lenteli noin 150 kesykyyhkyn parvi, nousten ja laskeutuen takaisin vähän väliä. Joukossa oli myös muutama alppivaris. Langalla lauleskeli muutama mustakottarainen.

A flock of about 150 Domestic pigeons were flying in the field in front of the farmhouse, taking off and landing every now and then. There were also a few Alpine crows among them. A few Spotless starlings were singing on the wire.

Hieman maatalon jälkeen minun piti pysäyttää auto ja kiikaroida mitä lintuja maassa noin 50 metrin päässä oli. Näyttivät kahlaajilta ja tarkempi tutkimus selvitti, että kyse on noin 30 kapustarinnasta.

A little after the farmhouse I had to stop the car and look at the birds on the ground about 50 meters away. They looked like waders and closer examination revealed that they were about 30 European golden plovers.

Sitten parvi yhtäkkiä pelästyi jotain ja nousi ilmaan. Ne kiertelivät pari minuuttia ilmassa ja toteisivat ettei vaaraa näkyvät ja laskeutuivat takaisin.

Then the flock suddenly got scared of something and took off. They circled in the air for a couple of minutes and then, realizing there was no danger in sight, they landed back.

Noin kilometrin ajon jälkeen saavuin pensaikkoiselle alueelle, jossa viime keväänä käydessäni havaitsin mehiläissyöjiä, mutta valitettavasti tällä kertaa yhtään ei ollut näkyvissä.

After driving about a kilometer, I arrived at a bushy area where I had spotted European bee-eaters when I visited last spring, but unfortunately this time none were visible.

However, a grasshopper hopped towards me on the path.

Pensaikossa näin ja kuulin useita eri lintuja: punarinta, samettipääkerttu, mustapäätasku, västäräkki, tikli ja harmaasirkku.

In the bushes I saw and heard several different birds: European robin, Sardinian warbler, European stonechat, White wagtail, European goldfinch and Corn bunting.

Palasin samaa tietä takaisin ja lähestyessäni maatilaa näkymä oli niin hieno, että oli pakko pysähtyä ja ottaa maisemakuva maantiestä. Näissä olosuhteissa maanviljely on todella haastavaa.

I returned the same way and as I approached the farm the view was so beautiful that I had to stop and take a landscape photo from the road. Farming in these conditions is really challenging.

Sitten oli aika kääntyä tältä tieltä kohti Cabo de São Vicenten majakkaa ja upeita kallioita.

Then it was time to turn off this road towards the Cabo de São Vicente lighthouse and the stunning cliffs.

Kun sain auton pysäköityä parkkialueelle, niin eteeni lennähti etelänharmaalokki, joka rauhallisesti katseli minua.

When I was able to park my car in the parking lot, a Yellow-legged gull flew in front of me and calmly watched me.

Varsinaisesti tänne tullessani haluan aina nähdä suulia, eikä tälläkään kertaa tarvinnut pettyä. Parhaimmillaan jopa 4 suulaa lensi peräkkäin.

Actually, when I come here, I always want to see Northern gannets, and this time I was not disappointed. At best, up to 4 Northern gannets flew in a row.

Sagresissa lintujen tarkkailuun meni aikaa noin 3 tuntia ja matkaa kertyi 10 km sekä valokuvia tuli noin 400 kpl.

Havaitsin seuraavat linnut (23 lajia): 150 kesykyyhky, 30 kapustarinta, 20 töyhtöhyyppä, 7 etelänharmaalokki, 7 suula, 5 mustakottarainen, 5 tikli, 5 västäräkki, 3 kottarainen, 3 peippo, 2 mustarastas, 2 harmaasirkku, 2 samettipääkerttu, sinisuohaukka, kattohaikara, alppivaris, kiuru, kivikkotöyhtökiuru, heinäkerttu, punarinta, mustapäätasku, niittykirvinen, hemppo, tiltaltti.

I observed the following birds (23 species): 150 Domestic pigeon, 30 European golden plover, 20 Northern lapwing, 7 Yellow-legged gull, 7 Northern gannet, 5 Spotless starling, 5 European goldfinch, 5 White wagtail, 3 Common starling, 3 Common chaffinch, 2 Common blackbird, 2 Corn bunting, 2 Sardinian warbler, Northern harrier, White stork, Alpine crow, Eurasian skylark, Zitting cisticola, European robin, European Stonechat, Meadow pipit, Common linnet, Common chiffchaff.
