Tänä vuonna teimme Nurmijärven Valkjärvellä taas kaksi vesilintulaskenta kierrosta, toinen 5. toukokuuta ja toinen 3. kesäkuuta.

Aloitimme kierrokset auringon noustessa Lähtelän rannasta.

This year, we conducted two more waterfowl counts at Valkjärvi in Nurmijärvi, one on May 5 and the other on June 3.

We began the counts at sunrise from the shore at Lähtelä.

Molemmille kierroksille saimme melko tuulettomat ja aurinkoiset säät, joten oli miellyttävää sähkömoottorilla varustetulla ProValkjärven veneellä kiertää järvi.

We had fairly calm and sunny weather for both trips, so it was a pleasure to cruise around the lake in the ProValkjärvi boat equipped with an electric motor.

Laskentaa meillä oli tekemässä kolme henkilöä.

We had three people working on the calculations.

Laskenta liittyy vuonna 2022 Klaukkalan rotariklubin aloitteesta perustettuun telkänpönttö projektiin, jossa teimme 20 telkänpönttöä Valkjärvelle ja haimme maanomistajilta luvat sijoittaa niitä heidän rantatonteilleen.

This count is part of the Common goldeneye nest box project launched in 2022 by the Klaukkala Rotary Club, in which we built 20 teal nest boxes for Lake Valkjärvi and obtained permission from landowners to place them on their lakeshore properties.

Tämän vuoden laskennan kohokohdiksi muodostuivat onnistuneet telkän pesinnät ja kahden naaraan sekä poikasten rengastukset. Minna-Mari suoritti rengastukset. Kolmas naaras ja poikuekin on nyt jo rengastettu.

The highlights of this year’s count were the successful nesting of the Common goldeneyes and the ringing of two females and their chicks. Minna-Mari carried out the ringing. A third female and her chicks have now also been ringed.

Täytyy sanoa, että on tuo poikasten jalkaan laitettavan renkaan laittaminen aikamoinen homma, kun jalka on niin pieni ja ohut. Rengas on isompi ja siksi renkaan ja jalan väliin laitetaan täyteainetta, joka sitten jalan kasvaessa kuluu pois. Näin rengas on aina sopivan kokoinen.

I have to say, putting that ring on a chick’s leg is quite a task, since the leg is so small and thin. The ring is larger, so you need to fill the space between the ring and the leg with filler material, which wears away as the leg grows. That way, the ring always fits perfectly.

Kierrämme veneellä järven myötäpäivään ja kierros kestää kahvitauon kanssa noin 3,5 tuntia.

We’ll take a boat tour around the lake in a clockwise direction; the tour, including a coffee break, lasts about 3.5 hours.

Rantaudumme kunkin pöntön kohdalla ja kurkistamme sisään ja sitten jatkamme matkaa. Veneessä ollessamme havainnoimme kaikki linnut, mutta keskitymme ranta- ja vesilintuihin.

We pull up at each nesting box, take a peek inside, and then continue on our way. While on the boat, we observe all the birds, but we focus on shorebirds and waterfowl.

Eniten näilläkin kahdella laskentakerralla havaitsimme silkkiuikkuja.

We observed the most Great crested grebes during these two counts.

Rantasipi on yleisin rantalintu.

The Common sandpiper is the most common shorebird.

Muita yleisiä ranta- ja vesilintuja ovat kalalokki, kalatiira ja sinisorsa sekä tietysti telkkä.

Other common shorebirds and waterfowl include the Common gull, the Common tern, the Mallard, and, of course, the Common goldeneye.

Pesintöjä havaittiin näissä laskennoissa: 3 telkkäpesintää, 2 silkkiuikkupesintää ja 1 sinisorsa pesintä, jossa 7 poikasta oli jo uimassa emonsa perässä.

The following nests were observed during these surveys: 3 goldeneye nests, 2 great crested grebe nests, and 1 mallard nest, where 7 ducklings were already swimming behind their mother.

Kaiken kaikkiaan näissä laskennoissa on havaittu 19 eri ranta- ja vesilintulajia. Kun laskennat tehdään vain kahtena aamuna, niin tottakai vuosien välille helposti tulee isojakin eroja havaittujen lintujen määrässä.

In total, 19 different species of shorebirds and waterfowl have been observed in these counts. Since the counts are conducted over just two mornings, it’s only natural that there are significant differences in the number of birds observed from one year to the next.

Kierroksen jälkeen minulla oli sitten ilo kertoa muutamalle maanomistajalle, että nyt heidän maallaan olevassa pöntössä on pesintä menossa.

After the tour, I had the pleasure of telling a few landowners that birds were currently nesting in the birdhouse on their property.
