Sain kutsun hyvän ystäväni hautajaisiin Eurajoelle ja päätin, että lähden päivää aiemmin, jotta ei tarvitse ennen aamukirkkoa ajaa useaa tuntia paikkakunnalle. Niinpä sitten edellisenä päivänä ehdin vierailla kahdella Säkylässä sijaitsevan Pyhäjärven rannalla olevassa hyvässä lintupaikassa.
I received an invitation to a good friend’s funeral in Eurajoki and decided to set off a day earlier so that I wouldn’t have to drive for several hours to get there before the morning service. So, on the day before, I managed to visit two excellent birding spots on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi in Säkylä.
Ensin ajoin Säkylän keskustaan Rantatielle ja sieltä Lehmuuntietä pitkin kohti Pihlavan saarta.
First, I drove to the centre of Säkylä along Rantatie, and from there along Lehmuuntie towards the island of Pihlava.

You are not allowed to drive onto the island, but just before the bridge leading to it, on the right-hand side of the road, there is a good car park where you can leave your car and walk to the bridge from there.
Silta on kuulemma erittäin hyvä paikka kevät- ja syysmuutoilla, sillä Pyhäjärvi on valtava ja osuu useiden vesilintujen muuttoreitille. Tarkempia tietoja löytyy Porin Lintutieteellisen yhdistyksen sivuilta.
I’ve heard the bridge is an excellent spot for spring and autumn migration, as Lake Pyhäjärvi is vast and lies on the migration route of many waterbirds. More detailed information can be found on the website of the Pori Ornithological Society (only in Finnish).
As I approached the bridge, I began to hear the calls of gulls and terns. The common terns, in particular, were flying about busily, and judging by their dives, there was plenty of food on offer.
When I then began scanning the area around me through my binoculars from the bridge, I spotted dozens of common terns and Common gulls spending time near one of the small islands. In total, I counted 40 Common terns and 22 Common gulls in the area.

Niiden viereisessä saaressa hieman kauempana erotin kiikarilla merihanhia noin 40.
On the neighbouring island, a little further away, I spotted about 40 Greylag geese through my binoculars.
Closer to the shore, a family of Mute swans was swimming, comprising the adults and five chicks. The chicks still looked quite small, so it will be a while yet before they migrate.

Toinen emoista näytti poikasille jo mallia, miten lähdetään lentoon.
One of the mothers was already showing the chicks how to take flight.

Kaikenkaikkiaan Pihlavassa havaitsin: 40 kalatiira, 40 merihanhi, 22 kalalokki, 7 kyhmyjoutsen, 5 naurulokki, 3 laulujoutsen, 2 härkälintu, meriharakka, räyskä ja silkkiuikku.
All in all, in Pihlava I spotted: 40 Common tern, 40 Greylag goose, 22 Common gull, 7 Mute swan, 5 Black-headed gull, 3 Whooper swan, 2 Red-necked grebe, Eurasian oystercatcher, Caspian tern and Great crested grebe.
Then it was time to move on, so I drove back to Rantatie and from there turned onto Katismaantie. I then drove along that road to the large car park at the harbour on your right side. You could also get as far as the island, but the parking spaces there are mainly for restaurant customers. Walking across the bridge towards the island, you also see far more birds than if you were to drive all the way to the island.
Sillalta ja saarelta aukeaa hieno näkymä kohti Pyhäjärven ulappaa, josta löysin kuvauksellisen kohteen eli yksittäisen puun, joka kasvaa pienen pienellä saarella.
From the bridge and the island, there’s a splendid view out across the open waters of Lake Pyhäjärvi, where I found a photogenic subject: a solitary tree growing on a tiny, tiny island.

Sillalta lähti venelaitureita, jossa lokit ja tiirat nauttivat ihmisten heille rakentamista istuma- ja makuupaikoista.
Boat jetties extended from the bridge, where gulls and terns enjoyed the perches and resting places that people had built for them.

A young black-headed gull was circling comfortably near the bridge, and I managed to take a few photos of it with ease.

There were also some water-loving birds there, such as a few Eurasian coots and a single Red-necked grebe.

As I was looking around on that island, I noticed a flock of Mallards resting in the garden of a house by the shore.
Just as I was about to leave, a White wagtail came over to say goodbye to me.

The restaurant on the island serves good pizza, which I tried when I visited here last year. Whilst eating it, you can also admire the stunning views of Lake Pyhäjärvi.
Katismaalla havaitsemani linnut: 22 sinisorsa, 12 kalatiira, 10 naurulokki, 9 kalalokki, 4 nokikana, 3 haarapääsky, härkälintu, varis ja västäräkki.
Birds I spotted at Katismaa: 22 Mallard, 12 Common tern, 10 Black-headed gull, 9 Common gull, 4 Eurasian coot, 3 Barn swallow, a Red-necked grebe, a Carrion crow and a White wagtail.
I visited this time in the middle of summer; I should come here sometime during the spring or autumn migration season to watch and photograph the birds.
