Vierailin 2019 A Rocha kohteessa, joka sijaitsee Alvorissa.
I found some photos of an interesting location in my old archive and decided to write a post about it here.
In 2019, I visited an A Rocha site located in Alvor. It’s easy to get there by driving along the N125 and turning at the roundabout near the Mexilhoeira Grande train station. I’ve written about this area and its birds in previous posts about the Alvor Pools on February 12, 2026, and December 19, 2025, as well as in a report from October 28, 2024, about a nature trail walk in this area.

14.2.2019 olin päätynyt vierailemaan A Rocha järjestön lintujen tutkimusasemalla järjestettyyn rengastusnäytökseen. En enää muista mistä sain tiedon, että torstaisin klo 10 on vapaa pääsy aseman toiminnan esittelyyn: rengastusnäytös, museokierto (yksi huone) ja kahvit.
On February 14, 2019, I ended up attending a bird ringing demonstration held at the A Rocha organization’s bird research station. I no longer remember how I found out that on Thursdays at 10 a.m., there is free admission to a tour of the station’s activities: a bird ringing demonstration, a museum tour (one room), and coffee.
About 20 people had gathered there that morning. I’d guess most were from the UK, with a few from other countries. We sat on chairs in the corner of the house, with a canopy and a table in front of us.
Asema on perustettu 1987.
The station director welcomed everyone and spoke about the station, the organization, the station’s operations, and the event’s program, adding that people were welcome to ask questions at any time if any came to mind. The station was founded in 1987.
Asemalla asuu muutamia vapaaehtoisia (ympäri maailmaa) muutaman kuukauden kerrallaan ja he sitten yhdessä vakituisten tutkijoiden kanssa tekevät tutkimusta ja samalla seuraavat lintujen elämää.
A few volunteers (from around the world) live at the station for a few months at a time, and together with the permanent researchers, they conduct research and observe the birds’ lives.

Sitten paikalle tuli kaksi lintututkijaa esittelemään lintujen rengastusta ja kertomaan mitä siinä tehdään.
Then two ornithologists arrived to demonstrate bird ringing and explain what it involves.

Ensinnäkin lintuja pyydystetään rengastettavaksi verkoilla, jotka ”tyhjennetään” linnuista melko usein.
First, birds are caught for ringing using nets, which are “emptied” of birds fairly often.
The birds are collected from the nets, and each bird to be ringed is placed in a small cloth bag. In the previous photo, the bird bags are on the left next to the ringers’ table, and they are actually completely still. The ringers explained that the birds are carefully placed in the bags, and since it’s dark inside, they calm down.
Five birds were ringed during the event, but here I’ll talk about just one—the ringing of an Eurasian blackcap—and the steps involved in the ringing process.
Bird ringing usually requires two people: while one examines the bird and takes measurements, the other records the results in a notebook, from which they are then entered into a database, making the data available to all ringers and researchers. Ensin esittelijät määrittävät linnun lajin. Sen jälkeen vuorossa on itse rengastus. Renkaat on kohdistettu jokaiselle rengastajalle koodeilla.
First, the presenters identify the bird species. Then it’s time for the ringing itself. The rings are assigned to each ringer using codes.
Varsinkin pikkulintujen renkaat ovat numerojärjestyksessä nauhassa. Ne käytetään järjestyksessä. Kun linnulle laitettava rengas otetaan esiin, niin ensin renkaan tiedot kirjataan ja sitten tiedot linnusta, jolle rengas on laitettu (laji, pvm, paikka).
The rings for small birds, in particular, are arranged in numerical order on a string. They are used in order. When a ring to be placed on a bird is taken out, the ring’s information is recorded first, followed by the information about the bird on which the ring was placed (species, date, location).

Rengas sisältää seuraavat tiedot: maa, rengastuskeskus, kirjaintunnus ja numerosarja (kuvassa on isomman linnun rengas). Nämä tiedot yksilöivät linnun ja rengastajan toisiinsa.
The ring contains the following information: country, ringing centre, letter code, and a series of numbers (the photo shows a ring for a larger bird). This information links the bird to the ringer.

The ring is pressed into place, and in the case of a young bird whose leg is still growing, if necessary “filler” is placed between the ring and the leg, the ”filler” gradually dissolves over time.

Alla olevassa kuvassa sitten näkyy lopputulos eli lintu on rengastettu.
The photo below shows the final result: the bird has been ringed.

Next comes the assessment of sex, age, and molting status, followed by weighing. I have to say that even though the bird looks a bit miserable in that small container, it’s only there for about 5-10 seconds and remains surprisingly calm the whole time.

Seuraavaksi on vuorossa erilaisia mittauksia eli esim. siiven pituus ja sulkien kunto.
Next up are various measurements, such as wing length and the condition of the feathers.

Lopuksi lintu päästetään vapaaksi. Koko toimenpide kesti noin pari minuuttia.
In the end the bird is released. The entire procedure took about a couple of minutes.
Suosittelen poikkeamaan.
At the end, there was still time for a discussion and some coffee. It was a pleasant and informative presentation, and it was nice to get to know this place. I recommend stopping by.

While writing on this article, I also checked the current situation. A Rocha continues to hold bird ringing demonstrations on Thursday mornings throughout the year (except between Christmas and New Year’s). Read more details and registration instructions here. As of this writing, the registration pages listed the summer schedule (through September 11).
Samassa paikassa toimii myös A Rocha Life, joka on yhtiö, jonka omistaa A Rocha organisaatio. Yritys tarjoaa eri pituisia (jopa viikon) opastettuja linturetkiä Algarvessa ja Alentejossa.
A Rocha Life, a company owned by the A Rocha organization, is also based there. The company offers guided birding tours of varying lengths (up to a week) in the Algarve and Alentejo.
