I spent a week in the town of Imatra, on Finland’s eastern border, in August 2025, and whilst I was there I explored some of its birdwatching and nature spots.
16. elokuuta vierailin ihan Imatran keskustassa ja pysäköin autoni Imatran Valtionhotellin vieressä olevalle parkkipaikalle. Valtionhotelli on upea ilmestys.
On 16 August, I visited the centre of Imatra and parked my car in the car park next to the Imatra Valtionhotelli. The Valtionhotelli is a magnificent sight.

Siitä on helppo löytää polku Kruunupuistoon, joka on upea saari Vuoksi-joen kahden haaran välissä. Kruununpuisto on Suomen ensimmäinen luonnonsuojelualue, perustettu 1842. Siellä on noin 600 metriä pitkä luontopolku.
From there, it is easy to find the path to Kruunupuisto, a magnificent island situated between the two branches of the Vuoksi River. Kruunupuisto is Finland’s first nature reserve, established in 1842. There is a nature trail there that is approximately 600 metres long.

You can reach the island by crossing the dam bridge, from where you can admire the lower reaches of the Imatrankoski rapids. In the photo below, I’m already at the lower reaches, taking a photo towards the dam bridge and the upper reaches. This time, no water was being released from the dam, but if you’d like to see it, check the release timetables on the Imatrankoski website.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see or hear many birds on Kruunusaari, but otherwise it’s a wonderful place to visit and admire interesting sights, such as the giant’s kettles.

Monet niistä ovat melko isoja, joten täytyy katsoa ettei vahingossa putoa sellaiseen.
Many of them are quite large, so you have to be careful not to accidentally fall into one.
Patosillan toisella puolella on puisto-puutarha tyyppinen alue, jossa voit ihailla kukkaistutuksia, taideteoksia, puron solinaa ja myös lintuja.
On the other side of the dam bridge is a park-and-garden-style area where you can admire the flower beds, works of art, the babbling of the stream and the birds.

A few Eurasian wigeons and a couple of Mallards were swimming in the stream, and a Common gull was perched on a rock.

A little further on, there was a fence by the riverbank, and a Common wood pigeon was perched on it, cooing at passers-by.

And this is what the dam looks like upstream of the bridge – the river is like a huge lake.

Minulta meni noin 1,5 tuntia 900 metrin kävelyyn.
It took me about 1.5 hours to walk 900 metres.
Kotisivuilta voit ladata laajan pdf-tiedosto esitteen saaren luonnosta. Se kannattaa lukea ennen saarelle menoa.
The next day, I went for a walk on Lammassaari in Imatra, which also has a nature trail circling the island. I chose the Rantapolku trail (marked in orange on the map), which runs along the island’s shores. You can download a comprehensive PDF brochure about the island’s nature from the website. It’s worth reading before you head to the island.

Melkein heti kun olin parkkipaikalla astunut ulos autosta huomasin läheisessä puussa puukiipijän. Sitä on melko haastava huomata männyn rungolta.
Almost as soon as I’d got out of the car in the car park, I spotted an Eurasian treecreeper in a nearby tree. It’s quite difficult to spot on a pine trunk.

Vedessä ui kaksi isokoskeloa ja talitintti lauloi jossain lähellä.
Two Common mergansers were swimming in the water and a Great tit was singing somewhere nearby.

The scenery in Lammassaari is simply stunning: one moment you’re looking out over the open expanse of the lake, and the next you find yourself surrounded by trees on a narrow ridge or amidst blueberry bushes.

On the northern edge of the island there is a lovely pond where a few Mallards were now swimming about; they seemed quite used to people, as a couple of them came ashore just 10 metres away from me.

When I finally reached the northern tip of the island, there were several gulls and swallows there.

Sitten olikin enää pieni matka takaisin parkkipaikalle. Reitti vei minulta noin 3,5 tuntia ja pituutta tuli 3,6 kilometriä
After that, it was just a short walk back to the car park. The route took me about 3,5 hours and was 3.6 kilometres long
On 20 August, it was Tiuruniemi’s turn, and I set off along the Rauha lakeside trail to the tip of Vipeleenniemi, then followed the roads to the Vipeleensuo nature trail, and from there back to Holiday Club Saimaa.

Rannalla kävellessä näkyi useita Kanadanhanhi sekä yksi härkälintu.
Whilst walking along the beach, I spotted many Canada goose and a single Red-necked grebe.

Vipeleensuon luontoreitti olikin sitten pikkulintujen aarreaitta. Siellä vilahteli lintuja vähän väliä, onneksi muutamasta sain otettua valokuvankin.
The naturetrail at Vipeleensuo turned out to be a real treasure trove of small birds. Birds flitted about every now and then, and luckily I managed to take a few photos of some of them.

A cosy spot for resting and having a snack had been set up in the middle of the trail and the marsh.

The route took about 3.2 hours and was 4.8 kilometres long.
On August 21, it was time to explore the upper reaches of the Vuoksi River, and I began birdwatching from the Niskalampi harbor.

Sieltä siirryin sitten autolla joen vartta pitkin kohti Imatran keskustaa. Pysähdyin Lippilahdentien varrella olevalle näköalapaikalle, kun näin joessa ainakin 5 isokoskelo naarasta.
From there, I drove along the riverbank toward cnetre of Imatra. I stopped at a lookout point along Lippilahdentie when I spotted at least five female Common mergansers in the river.
If you look closely at the beak of the Common merganser’s in the first photo, you can see its “teeth,” which give it a firm grip on small fish.

Sieltä jatkoin yli Tainionkosken johtavan Tornan sillan päätyen voimalaitoksen alapuolelle Neitsytniemeen.
From there, I continued across the Torna Bridge, which spans the Tainionkoski, ending up at Neitsytniemi, downstream from the power plant.

Sinne lähdettiin Neitsytniemen kartanon parkkipaikalta polkua pitkin.
I set off from the Neitsytniemi Manor parking lot, following the trail. I was surrounded by dense deciduous forest and thickets, and the Vuoksi River glinted through the trees. At the tip of the headland is a fishing and camping spot with large docks.
Pikkulinnut lauloivat iloisesti ympärillä koko matkan niemen kärkeen. Ja löysin myös puukiipijän valokuvattavaksi.
Small birds sang cheerfully all around me the whole way to the tip of the peninsula. And I also found a tree creeper to photograph.

It’s fascinating to watch an Eurasian treecreeper as it climbs up the tree trunk from the bottom, paying no attention to people, occasionally moving to the other side of the trunk, and then poking its long beak under the bark in the hope of finding a small insect there.
Kiitos Imatra.
