Vietin viikon Vierumäellä Urheiluopistolla ja samassa yhteydessä kävin myös Heinolan ja Lahden lintupaikoilla.
I spent a week in Vierumäki Sports Institute and during that week I visited couple of bird places in Heinola and Lahti
Maanantaina 11.8. aloitin Vierumäen Laviassuolta, suon pohjoisnurkassa on hyvä paikka seurata lintuja, mutta siellä oli melko hiljaista, vain muutama sinisorsa ja haapana uiskenteli lammessa.
On Monday, August 11th, I started from Vierumäki Laviassuo, the northern corner of the bog is a good place to watch birds, but it was quite quiet there, only a few Mallards and Eurasian Wigeons swimming in the pond.
Sieltä ajelin sitten Heinolan Koskensaaren parkkipaikalle Koskensaarentien päähän ja lähdin kävelemään saaren luontopolkua. Valitettavasti täälläkin oli melko hiljainen lintupäivä talitiaisia ja sinitiaisia lukuunottamatta.
From there I drove to the Koskensaari parking lot in Heinola at the end of Koskensaarentie and went for a walk on the island’s nature trail. Unfortunately, it was a fairly quiet birding day here too, except for the Great tits and Eurasian blue tits.
Sitten olikin jo aika vierailla Heinola lintuhoitolassa, jossa voi tutustua lintuihin, jotka ovat vahingoittuneet ja saavat täällä hoitoa, jotta pääsivät palaamaan luontoon. Upea paikka, kannattaa vierailla.
Then it was time to visit the Heinola bird sanctuary, where you can get to know birds that have been injured and are receiving treatment here so that they can return to the wild. A great place, worth a visit.
Tiistaina 12.8. ajoin Heinolan Lakeassuon vieressä olevan täyttömäen laella olevalla lintutornille. Sieltä oli hyvät näköalat, mutta kahta västäräkkiä lukuunottamatta en nähnyt muita lintuja. Edellisenä ja samana päivänä myöhemmin siellä oli havainnoitu useampia petolintuja.
On Tuesday 12.8. I drove to the bird tower on the top of the hill next to Lakeassuo in Heinola. There were good views from there, but apart from two White wagtails I didn’t see any other birds. Several birds of prey had been observed there the previous day and later that day.
Täyttömäeltä ajelin sitten kohti Lahtea ja siellä Kymijärvelle. Kymijärvellä on 5 karttaan merkittyä (kiikarit) näköalapaikkaa ja aloitin järven kiertämisen ylhäältä.
From the hill I then drove towards Lahti and to Kymijärvi. Kymijärvi has 5 viewpoints marked on the map (with binoculars) and I started to circumnavigate the lake from the top.
Pysäköin auton Koivukallionkadulle rannan lähelle ja kävelin rantaan.
I parked the car on Koivukallionkatu near the beach and walked to the beach.
Ympärillä lensi pari harakkaa ja punarinta. Järvellä kauempana näytti olevan muutamia lokkeja, lähempänä lensi harmaalokki. Silkkiuikku poikasensa kanssa ui jonkun matkan päässä rannasta.
A couple of Eurasian magpies and an European robin were flying around. There seemed to be a few gulls further out on the lake, and an European herring gull was flying closer. A Great crested grebe and its chick were swimming some distance from the shore.
Käpytikka lensi lähikoivuun ja alkoi hakata runkoa, 4 varista lensi raakkuen kohti etelää.
A great spotted woodpecker flew to a nearby birch and started pecking at the trunk, 4 Carrion crows flew hooting towards the south.
Sitten alkoi yhtäkkiä kaislikko suhista ja samassa 9 sinisorsa uiskenteli ihan laiturin viereen, todennäköisesti katsomaan olisiko minulta saatavissa jotain syötävää. Valitettavasti ei.
Then suddenly the reeds started rustling and at the same time 9 Mallards swam right next to the pier, probably to see if I could get them something to eat. Unfortunately not.
Sitten lähdin kiertämään järveä myötäpäivään ja saavuin Haikkarinniemelle, joka on melkein järven pohjukassa oleva niemi, karttakuvassa punaisella ympyröity.
Then I set off to circle the lake clockwise and arrived at Haikkarinniemi, which is a cape almost at the bottom of the lake, circled in red on the map.
Pysäköin auton Toivolantien päähän ja lähdin kävelemään polkua metsään. Siellä on opastettu Vanhankartanon luontopolku. Kun olin ehtinyt niemen itärannan keskivaiheilla rantaan asti, niin kiikarilla näin järvellä elämäni ensimmäisen mustalinnun. Valitettavasti se oli liian kaukana, jotta siitä olisi saanut minkäänlaista valokuvaa.
I parked the car at the end of Toivolantie and started walking along the path into the forest. There is a guided Vanhankartano nature trail there. When I had reached the shore in the middle of the eastern shore of the cape, I saw my first Common scoter on the lake with my binoculars. Unfortunately, it was too far away to get a proper of photo.
Haikkarinniemen luontopolku kiertää koko niemen ja minulla meni melkein tunti kävellä se läpi. Voin suositella luontopolkua, siellä on paljon erilaista kasvillisuutta sekä paljon lintuja. Reitillä havaitsin seuraavat linnut: 2 sepelkyyhky, 2 harmaasieppo, mustalintu, käpytikka, nuolihaukka, varis, sinitiainen, sirittäjä, pajulintu, hippiäinen, puukiipijä, punarinta ja kirjosieppo.
The Haikkarinniemi nature trail goes around the entire cape and it took me almost an hour to walk through it. I can recommend the nature trail, there is a lot of different vegetation and a lot of birds. On the trail I saw the following birds: 2 Common wood pigeons, 2 Spotted flycatcher, Common scoter, Great spotted woodpecker, Eurasian hobby, Carrion crow, Eurasian blue tit, Wood warbler, Willow warbler, Goldcrest, Eurasian treecreeper, European robin and European pied flycatcher.
Näinkin paljon tunnistaa lintuja, kun käyttää lintujen äänet tunnistavia puhelimen sovelluksia esim. Merlin Bird ID, BirdNET tai suomalaista Muuttolintujen kevät. Tunnistan yleisimmät linnut äänestä, mutta välillä tulee sellaisia ääniä tai lauluja, että käytän sovellusta tai mieluummin kahta sovellusta saadakseni varmistuksen oikeasti havainnosta. Jos kaksi sovellusta antaa saman tunnistuksen, niin sitten tunnistus alkaa olla jo melko varmalla pohjalla.
This is how I identify birds a lot when I use phone apps that recognize bird sounds, such as Merlin Bird ID, BirdNET or the Finnish Muuttolintujen kevät (Migratory Birds Spring). I recognize the most common birds by their sound, but sometimes there are such sounds or songs that I need to use an app, or preferably two apps, to get confirmation of a real sighting. If two apps give the same identification, then the identification is already starting to be quite reliable.
Sitten poikkesin Kymijärven uimarannalla ja siellä näkyi haarapääskyjä, västäräkki ja puukiipijän ääni.
Then I stopped by the Kymijärvi swimming beach and saw Barn swallows, a White wagtail and heard the sound of an Eurasian treecreeper.
Viimeksi ajoin vielä Kariston uimarannalle ja kanavalle, mutta ei sielläkään näkynyt kuin muutama harmaalokki.
At last I drove to the Karisto beach and canal, but there were only a few European herring gulls to be seen.
Olipas tällä kertaa vähälintuiset linturetket Vierumäellä, ehkä ensi vuonna on sitten enemmän.
This time the trips were really having only a few birds in Vierumäki, maybe next year there will be more.
