Aloitin lintupaikkojen esittelyn Aviisissa Algarven länsipuolelta ja nyt käyn läpi Albufeiran ja Faron välissä eli Algarven keskialueella olevia lintupaikkoja.

I started introducing birding sites in Aviisi, on the western side of the Algarve, and now I’m going to go through the birding sites between Albufeira and Faro, in the central Algarve.

Vilamouran Viktoria golf kentän länsipuolella on kiva vierailupaikka, Canical de Vilamoura, sillä alueella on peltoa, ruovikkoa, yksi iso allas ja kaksi lampea. Alueella voi siis nähdä hyvin erilaisia lintuja. Molempien lampien rannalle on rakennettu myös lintutornit, joissa istuskellessa ja lintuja seuraillessa aika kuluu kuin siivillä.

To the west of the Viktoria golf course in Vilamoura is a nice place to visit, Canical de Vilamoura, as the area has fields, reeds, one large pool and two ponds. So you can see a wide variety of birds in the area. Birdwatching towers have also been built on the shores of both ponds, where you can sit and watch the birds, and time flies.

Käänny Caminho da Fonte do Ulme tieltä pikkutielle ja jatka sitä vajaa kilometri, kunnes vasemmalla puolella on talo, jonka seinässä on linnun kuva. Voit jättää auton siihen tien sivuun (A). Paikka alkaa melko pian golf kentän laidalta ja kun kävelee altaan reunan vieressä kulkevaa tietä kohti lampia, niin tien ja altaan välisen ojan ruovikossa kuvasin mustapääkutojan, joka tekee mielenkiintoisia pesiä ruokojen väliin. Näihin pesiin se sitten alakautta pujahtaa sisään.

Turn off the Caminho da Fonte do Ulme road onto a small road and continue for less than a kilometer until you see a house on the left with a picture of a bird on the wall. You can leave your car on the side of the road (A). The place starts quite soon from the edge of the golf course and when you walk along the road next to the edge of the pond towards the pond, in the reeds of the ditch between the road and the pond I photographed a Black-headed weaver, which makes interesting nests between the reeds. It then slips into these nests from below.

Lammilla olen löytänyt myös liejukanan tutkimassa mitä vedestä löytyy sekä ruovikon päällä metsästäneen ruskosuohaukan.

At the ponds, I have also found a Common moorhen exploring what is in the water and a Marsh harrier hunting on top of the reeds.

Alueen peltojen reunoilta löytyy myös useita pikkulintuja kuten mustapäätasku sekä hemppo.

Several small birds, such as the European stonechat and the Common linnet, can also be found on the edges of the fields in the area.

Hieman Quarteiran itäpuolella on ranta Praia Ponte Velho, jonne mennessä on vasemmalla laguuni Foz de Almargem, rannan läheisyydessä on parkkipaikka (B).

A little east of Quarteira is the beach Praia Ponte Velho, where you will find the lagoon Foz de Almargem on your left. There is a parking lot (B) near the beach.

Siellä on helppo havaita erilaisia sorsia esim. punapäänarsku ja kahlaajia esim. mustajalkatylli.

It is easy to spot various ducks there, such as the Red-crested pochard, and waders, such as the Kentish plover.

Kun siellä viimeksi kävin, niin kameraan sattui myös hellyttävä tilanne nokikanan jutellessa poikaselleen.

When I last visited there, the camera also caught a touching scene of an Eurasian coot talking to her chick.

Kun Quarteirasta sitten jatketaan vielä lisää kohti itää, niin tullaan valtavalle Ria Formosan luonnonsuojelualueelle Faron länsipuolelle. Hyvä paikka aloittaa seikkailu on ajaa Quinta do Lagon alueen läpi San Lorenzon golf kentän eteläpuolelle Avenida Andre Jordania ja siellä on iso parkkipaikka juuri ennen Praia da Quinta do Lagon rantaa (C). Ria Formosan kansallispuisto jatkuu Vila Real de Santo Antónioon asti.

Continuing further east from Quarteira, you will come to the vast Ria Formosa nature reserve to the west of Faro. A good place to start your adventure is to drive through the Quinta do Lago area to the south of the San Lorenzo golf course on Avenida Andre Jordan and there is a large car park just before Praia da Quinta do Lago (C). The Ria Formosa National Park continues all the way to Vila Real de Santo António.

Alueella on meren rannalla paljon kahlaajia mm. karikukko, punajalkaviklo ja pikkusirrejä. Näitä voi hyvin tarkkailla, kun kävelee golf kentän väylän viertä kohti Faroa ja tulee ensimmäiselle lintutornille.

There are many waders in the area by the sea, including Ruddy turnstone, Common redshank and Little stint. These can be easily observed when you walk along the fairway of the golf course towards Faro and come to the first birdwatching tower.

Matkaa jatkettaessa lintutornilta hieman sisämaahan tullaan golf kentän keskellä olevalle laguunille, jossa on myös lintutorni, jolta on hienot näköalat ruovikkoon ja laguunin keskelle. Laguunin reunoilla viihtyvät mm. sulttaanikanat ja pronssi-iibikset.

Continuing the journey a little inland from the birdwatching tower, you will come to a lagoon in the middle of the golf course, which also has a birdwatching tower, offering great views of the reedbeds and the middle of the lagoon. Swamp hen and Glossy ibis, among others, thrive on the edges of the lagoon.

Ruovikossa voi hyvällä onnella nähdä pikkuhaikaran, joka on hyvä piiloutumaan, sillä sen väritys on sama kuin ruovikon väri.

With good luck, you may see a Little bittern in the reeds, which is good at hiding because its coloration is the same as the color of the reeds.

Laguunissa uiskentelee useita eri vesilintuja esim. lapasorsa, pikku-uikku ja sinisorsan poikasia.

Several different water birds swim in the lagoon, such as Northern shoveller, Little grebe and Mallard chicks.

Tästä eteenpäin on sitten useampi reittivaihtoehto eli voi jatkaa eteenpäin golf kentän reunaa myötäillen kohti Ludoa ja sieltä kääntyä oikealle kohti merta ja risteyksessä vähän ennen merta kääntyä taas oikealle, jolloin pääsee takaisin ensimmäiselle lintutornille. Toinen vaihtoehto on palata ensimmäiselle lintutornille eli noin 400 metriä takaisinpäin ja kääntyä vasemmalle kohti Faroa, siitä voi sitten rakentaa uuden reitin, sillä vaihtoehtoja on monia. Minä suosittelen ensimmäisellä kerralla käyttämään Ludo reittiä.

From here on, there are several route options, i.e. you can continue along the edge of the golf course towards Ludo and from there turn right towards the sea and at the intersection shortly before the sea turn right again, which will take you back to the first birdwatching tower. Another option is to return to the first birdwatching tower, i.e. about 400 meters back and turn left towards Faro, from which you can then build a new route, as there are many options. I recommend using the Ludo route the first time.

Kun lähdet kohti Ludoa, kävelet vielä hetken golf kentän reunaa (varo palloja) ja sitten käännyt oikealle avomaalle. Avomaalla on matalaa pensaikkoa, kanervikkoa ja pieniä ojia ja lampia vähän väliä, joten sielläkin näkee useita eri lintulajeja.

As you head towards Ludo, you walk along the edge of the golf course for a while (watch out for balls) and then turn right into open land. The open land has low bushes, heather and small ditches and ponds here and there, so you can see several different species of birds there too.

Mielenkiintoisimpia voisivat olla vaikka pitkäjalka, rantasipi tai avosetti, jolla on nokka mielenkiintoisesti ylöspäin kaartuva.

The most interesting ones could be the Black-winged stilt, Common sandpiper or Avocet, which has an interesting upward-curving beak.
